How to Calculate the Volumetric Weight of your package for air freight costs?
If you are a small business owner, you probably send courier packages and need to find out the cost of air freight for your package. You need to calculate the CBM (cubic meter) volume of the package and then divide it with a factor of 6000 to arrive at the volumetric weight of your carton box.
Air Freight charges are quoted in $ amount per kg basis and the weight considered is either based on the gross weight of the package or the volumetric weight of the box, whichever is higher.
What is Volumetric Weight?
The volumetric weight of a shipment is a calculation that reflects the density of a package. A less dense item generally occupies more volume of space, in comparison to its actual weight. The volumetric or dimensional weight is calculated and compared with the actual weight for each piece in the shipment to ascertain which is greater; the higher weight is used to calculate the total shipment cost.
How to Calculate the Volumetric Weight of your shipment for air freight?
If your carton dimensions are in centimeters, you first multiply the length x width x height to find the volume. Next you divide the volume in cubic cm by a factor of 6000 to arrive at the Volumetric weight in kg of your package.
If you carton dimensions are in inches, you first multiply the lenght x width x height to find the volume. Next you divide the volume in cubic inches by a factor of 366 to arrive at the Volumetric weight in kg of your package.
Here is a simple calculator you can use to find out the volumetric weight of your package.
